LAS VEGAS, NV, Jan. 9, 2003 -- SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK) today introduced the SanDisk Memory Stick® PRO™, a new Memory Stick form that incorporates a variety of advanced capabilities to enable Memory Stick PRO-optimized devices to capture and play back DVD-quality video in real time as well as store CD-quality music, high resolution digital images and other applications that require high performance and large capacities. The new format, which was jointly developed by Sony and SanDisk, includes additional features to secure personal content and data loss prevention in the event of accidental removal of the card during file recording.
Memory Stick PRO cards initially will feature capacities up to one gigabyte (GB). They will be identified by a unique metallic gold color but are otherwise identical in physical size and shape to the current generation of purple Memory Stick cards.
"SanDisk has invested its expertise and intellectual property in its partnership with Sony to make the Memory Stick PRO a reality," said Nelson Chan, senior vice president and general manager of SanDisks Retail Business Unit. "We believe that the key features of the Memory Stick Pro card-high performance, large capacities and advanced security features-will significantly enhance the consumers usage experience for storing their music, photos and videos on their optimized devices."
In addition, Memory Stick PRO cards feature advanced capabilities that will, when combined with devices that are optimized for the Memory Stick PRO format, ensure greater reliability by preventing data loss due to sudden power loss or accidental removal of media while recording or transferring files. Memory Stick PRO media can be safely removed during a file transfer process without the risk of damaging the file structure on the media.
For security, consumers can protect their personal data on the Memory Stick PRO cards with a file protection mechanism that prevents unauthorized access to the files in the event the card is lost or stolen. For commercial content providers, the new format includes the MagicGate™ copyright technology, which provides secure protection of commercial and copyrighted content, such as digital music and, in the future, video and games.
The SanDisk Memory Stick PRO cards will be available in 256 megabytes (MB), 512MB and 1 gigabyte (GB) capacities. They are expected to be available in April at many of the 50,000 retail stores world wide where SanDisk-branded products are sold at prices ranging from $189 to $879.
